Transfers from this airport

Arriving at Liberia Airport

LIR sits on the dry plains of Guanacaste, a short drive west of the provincial capital, Liberia. It is a compact airport, and in the December–April high season much of its traffic comes on flights from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, often landing within a few hours of each other around midday.

After immigration and customs you walk out into the arrivals area, where your driver waits with a name sign. The exact meeting spot is confirmed by the local provider by phone or WhatsApp. Share your flight number when booking so the pickup follows the real landing time.

Outside, expect heat. Guanacaste is the driest and sunniest part of the country, and the air-conditioned car is welcome after the queue.

Where travellers go from LIR

Gulf of Papagayo, under 1 hour
Playa Hermosa, Playas del Coco and the gated Papagayo Peninsula resorts are the closest beaches, roughly 30 to 50 minutes away on paved roads through Sardinal or along Route 253.
Gold Coast beaches, about 1–2 hours
Playa Flamingo, Playa Conchal and Tamarindo lie south-west via Route 21 and the Huacas junction. Typical drives run from just over an hour to almost two hours.
Nicoya Peninsula, 2–5 hours
Sámara and Nosara take around two and a half to three hours, the last part on rural roads. Santa Teresa, at the southern tip, is a four- to five-hour journey via Nicoya and Paquera.
Volcanoes and cloud forest, 1.5–4.5 hours
Rincón de la Vieja (Curubandé) is the nearest volcano area. Río Celeste (Bijagua) is about two to two and a half hours away, Monteverde three to nearly four, and La Fortuna (Arenal) around three and a half to four and a half.

Choosing the right vehicle

A standard car suits one to three travellers with normal suitcases. Families and groups of up to about seven usually book a minivan, and larger vehicles can be requested. Surfboards are common on Tamarindo, Nosara and Santa Teresa rides, and golf bags on Papagayo and Conchal trips. Declare them when booking so a vehicle with enough room is sent.

Child seats can be requested in advance. For Nosara, Santa Teresa and the last stretch to Rincón de la Vieja, where gravel sections remain, the local provider plans a suitable vehicle for the road.

Seasons in Guanacaste

The dry season from December to April brings steady sunshine, brown hillsides and the busiest weeks of the year, especially around Christmas, New Year and Easter. Book early for those dates.

From May to November the green season brings afternoon showers, fuller rivers and greener landscapes. September and October are usually the wettest months. Gravel roads to Nosara, Santa Teresa and the volcano lodges become muddier, so allow extra time. Monteverde and Arenal have their own wetter, cooler mountain climate all year.

Getting back for your flight

International check-in at LIR gets crowded on peak days, when several flights leave in the early afternoon. Plan to reach the terminal about three hours before an international departure.

Add the longest typical drive time to that buffer: about four hours before take-off from Playas del Coco or Papagayo, around five from Tamarindo or Conchal, six to seven from Sámara, Nosara or Monteverde, and around eight from Santa Teresa. Avoid mountain and lake roads after dark when possible.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Liberia Airport from the nearest beaches?

Playa Hermosa and Playas del Coco are roughly 30 to 50 minutes from LIR, and the Papagayo Peninsula resorts are about the same. Tamarindo takes around one and a half to two hours.

Is LIR or San José the better airport for Guanacaste?

For the Guanacaste beaches, Rincón de la Vieja and Río Celeste, Liberia is much closer. San José can make sense for the Central Valley or the Caribbean side, while Monteverde and Arenal are reachable from both.

Can the driver wait if my flight is delayed?

Yes. With your flight number the local provider follows the actual landing time, and the agreed price does not change because of a delay.

Can I go straight from LIR to Monteverde or La Fortuna?

Yes, both are direct private transfers. The drives take around three to four and a half hours and end on winding mountain or lake roads, so an arrival before mid-afternoon is easier.

Do the cars carry surfboards?

Yes, if you declare them when booking. Board length matters, so give the number of boards and their size so the right vehicle is planned.
