Route 21 south, then over the hills
The journey runs on Route 21 through the heart of Guanacaste, passing Filadelfia, Santa Cruz and the colonial town of Nicoya. In Nicoya the car turns onto Route 150, which climbs over green hills and comes down to the coast at Sámara.
It is paved the whole way, which makes Sámara one of the easier Nicoya Peninsula beaches to reach. The hill section has bends and slow trucks, so the drive takes longer than the distance suggests.
A sheltered, relaxed bay
Sámara's beach curves around a wide bay, with a reef offshore that keeps the waves gentle. That makes it a favourite with families, beginner surfers, kayakers and students at the town's Spanish schools.
The village is small and walkable. Hotels range from beachfront guesthouses to hillside lodges; Playa Carrillo, a few minutes south, is quieter with fewer buildings near the sand.
Further along the coast, the paved road to Sámara also gives access to Playa Buenavista and Barrigona, small beaches with a handful of lodges. Give the exact property if you stay outside town.
