The road from LIR to Tamarindo

The drive heads south-west on Route 21 across the flat cattle country of Guanacaste, past Filadelfia, to the busy Belén junction. There the car turns onto Route 155 towards Huacas, then follows the signs through small villages to the coast.

The road is paved all the way and mostly single carriageway. The slowest part is often the final kilometres, where Tamarindo's main road fills with scooters, delivery vans and pedestrians in the late afternoon.

Where you might be staying

Central Tamarindo
Hotels, surf schools and restaurants line the main beach road. Drop-off is at your door, though traffic slows the last few hundred metres.
Langosta and the hills
South of town, Playa Langosta has quieter hotels and villas, some on steep side roads. Send your exact address or a map pin.
Playa Grande
Across the estuary, Playa Grande is reached by a separate road around the mangroves, not through Tamarindo. Mention it clearly when booking.

Surfboards, families and luggage

Tamarindo is a surf town, and many travellers bring their own boards. Declare the number and length of boards when booking so a vehicle with enough space or a roof rack is sent. Families with car seats and strollers usually do better in a minivan, which also takes beach gear and coolers.

Playa Grande is part of Las Baulas National Marine Park, where leatherback turtles nest during the season. Night visits there are only possible with an official guide.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take from Liberia Airport to Tamarindo?

The typical drive is 90 to 113 minutes for 64 km. Late-afternoon traffic in Tamarindo itself can add a little time.

Is the road to Tamarindo paved?

Yes, Route 21 and Route 155 are paved all the way. Some side streets in Langosta and the hills are steeper or rougher, and the driver uses your map pin to find the entrance.

Can I bring two surfboards on the transfer?

Yes, as long as you declare them when booking with their length. The local provider then plans a vehicle that fits the boards and your luggage.

Can I stop at a supermarket on the way?

Ask when booking. A short stop near Huacas or in Tamarindo is often possible, but it should be agreed in advance with the local provider.

Is Playa Grande the same drop-off as Tamarindo?

No. Playa Grande sits across the estuary and is reached by its own road. Give your exact accommodation so the right destination is planned.
