Getting from LIR to Coco
Leaving the airport, the car follows Route 21 to Comunidad and turns onto Route 151, signposted for Sardinal. After Sardinal the road continues west and ends at Coco's main street, which runs down to the beach.
The road is paved and easy. Most of the 40 to 50 minutes is spent on the two-lane stretch through Sardinal and in town, where the main street is busy in the evening.
In peak season the junction near the airport and the Sardinal stretch can be slow around midday, when many flights land at once.
A working beach town
Coco is a lively, practical town with supermarkets, restaurants, bars and a long beach where fishing boats anchor. It is the main diving base on this coast: boats head out to the Catalina Islands and, in season, to the Bat Islands further north.
Ocotal, a small cove just to the south, is quieter and reached by a short hilly road. Mention it when booking if that is where you stay.
Packing notes for this route
- Dive equipment
- Regulators, wetsuits and fins in a separate bag add up. Declare them so a vehicle with enough boot space is planned.
- Fishing rods
- Rod tubes are long. Give their length when booking.
- Groups
- Groups of friends on dive trips often travel with a lot of soft bags. A minivan carries up to about seven people with luggage.
