It is the quickest resort transfer from LIR: a driver meets you in arrivals and drives you to the security entrance and on to your resort.

From the terminal to the security gate

The route leaves the airport on Route 21 and soon turns onto Route 253, a paved road that runs west through dry forest and open pasture towards the Gulf of Papagayo. There are no towns to cross, so the drive is short and predictable.

The peninsula is a private, gated resort area with a staffed security entrance. Guards check every arriving vehicle, and resorts usually expect the driver and vehicle details in advance.

Inside the peninsula

Behind the gate are a handful of large resorts, private residences, a golf course and a marina, spread over hills and coves. Distances inside are longer than they look, so the car takes you to the lobby or villa entrance rather than the gate.

Many guests bring golf clubs or fishing gear. Declare golf bags when booking: two sets plus suitcases usually need a minivan or larger car.

Timing your stay

Peak season
From December to April the resorts are busiest, and arrival days cluster around midday flights. Booking early helps for holiday weeks.
Green season
From May to November the hills turn green and afternoons can be rainy. The paved road stays easy, but leave a little extra time in heavy showers.

Heading back to the airport

Because the drive is short, a pickup about four hours before an international flight is usually enough. That allows for the 30 to 38 minute ride, leaving through the gate and roughly three hours at LIR. Arrange the time with your resort's front desk as well.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the drive from LIR to the Papagayo Peninsula?

Typically 30 to 38 minutes for 27 km on paved roads. Checks at the security entrance can add a few minutes.

Will the driver be allowed through the gate?

Vehicles are checked at the entrance and resorts often need driver details beforehand. Give your resort name when booking so this can be arranged.

Can you take us to the marina instead of a resort?

Yes, name the marina or your yacht as the destination when booking. Access follows the same security rules as the resorts.

Is there room for golf clubs?

Yes, if you declare them. For two golf bags and luggage, a minivan is usually the better choice.
