The Lake Arenal route
The usual route runs south on the Interamericana to Cañas, then climbs east on Route 142 to Tilarán, a breezy upland town surrounded by wind turbines. From there the road follows the north shore of Lake Arenal through Nuevo Arenal, crosses the dam and reaches La Fortuna.
The lake section is narrow and full of curves, with views of the water and, on clear days, the cone of Arenal. It is the slowest part of the journey.
Staying around La Fortuna
La Fortuna is the town at the foot of Arenal Volcano, with hot springs, hanging bridges, waterfall hikes and rafting nearby. Hotels are spread along the road west towards the volcano and the lake, so give your exact property, not just the town.
The climate here is wetter than Guanacaste even in the dry season. Waterproof bags for luggage are a good idea in the green season.
Some lodges sit on the lake road itself or on hillsides above the town, reached by short gravel drives. The driver finds them more easily with a map pin.
Making the long ride easier
- A stop on the way
- A short break in Tilarán or along the lake can be arranged in advance with the local provider.
- Families
- Request child seats and choose a minivan if you travel with lots of bags; space matters on a four-hour ride.
Returning to Liberia for your flight
Book a pickup about seven and a half hours before an international departure: up to 265 minutes of driving plus around three hours at LIR. For midday flights, many travellers prefer a last night closer to the airport.
