Up into the cloud forest

Most of the distance is on the Interamericana heading south from Liberia, past Bagaces and Cañas. Beyond the turn-off for the Friendship Bridge, the car leaves the highway onto Route 606 and starts the long climb through Guacimal to Santa Elena.

Route 606 is paved today, but it is steep and twisting, with few guardrails and frequent cloud near the top. Drivers take it slowly, which is why the climb accounts for much of the time.

The descent on the way back is just as slow, so the airport run should never be planned tightly.

What changes when you arrive

Temperature
Monteverde is far cooler than the Guanacaste coast, especially at night. Keep a fleece and a rain jacket in your hand luggage.
Wind and mist
From December to March, strong winds and drizzle are common at the ridge, even when the lowlands are dry.
Where you sleep
Santa Elena is the small town centre. Many lodges sit along the road to the reserves or on side roads; give the property name.

Why travellers come

Monteverde is known for its cloud forest reserves, hanging bridges, ziplines and night walks to look for frogs, insects and sleeping birds. Birdwatchers come for the resplendent quetzal, most often seen in the first months of the year.

Hotels here are mostly small lodges, so arrival times matter. Let your lodge know if you will arrive after dark.
