The lodges on the rim sit inside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, high above the crater floor, so this trip involves fees and gate rules beyond the transfer itself.
From the airport to the crater rim
The route runs via Arusha, Makuyuni, Mto wa Mbu and Karatu on paved roads, climbing the Rift Valley escarpment along the way. About 15 km past Karatu you reach the Loduare gate, the eastern entrance to the conservation area.
Beyond the gate the road winds up through dense montane forest to the crater rim, then follows the rim towards the lodges. This last section is slower, partly unpaved and often misty. Plan at least one proper break on a drive of this length.
A transfer is not a crater game drive
The driver takes you to your lodge on the rim. Descending to the crater floor is a separate game drive with its own vehicle fee and rules, organised by a licensed safari operator or your lodge.
Gates have fixed opening hours, so a daytime arrival is important. If your flight lands in the afternoon or evening, spend the first night in Arusha or Usa River and drive up the next morning.
Before you go
- Cold nights
- The rim lies at over 2,000 metres. Evenings and early mornings are cold, so keep warm clothes at the top of your bag.
- Rainy seasons
- In the long rains (about March to May) and short rains (around November and December), rim roads can be muddy and slow.
- Vehicle choice
- Tell us your group size and luggage. A minivan or larger vehicle suits families; ask for an off-road capable vehicle if your lodge recommends one.
