Arusha to Makuyuni
South-west on the paved road towards Dodoma, through dry Maasai grazing land with wide views.
Makuyuni to Mto wa Mbu
West on the paved road towards Ngorongoro until the escarpment wall rises ahead and the village appears among palms and banana groves.
Break
A short stop in Arusha or along the way for food and stretching is normal on a ride of this length.
Staying in Mto wa Mbu
Mto wa Mbu is a busy market village fed by springs from the escarpment, which is why it is so green compared with the plains around it. Lodges and tented camps sit in the village, along the lake shore side and up on the escarpment edge with views over Lake Manyara.
Many travellers stay here for Lake Manyara National Park, or as a stop between Tarangire and the Ngorongoro highlands. Cultural walks through the farms and market are a common afternoon activity.
Seasons and the flight home
The highway is paved, but some lodge tracks turn muddy in the long rains (about March to May) and short rains (around November and December). In the dry months the plains are dusty, so keep sunglasses handy.
For a return flight, allow about seven hours from Mto wa Mbu: up to four hours of driving, a break and around three hours at the airport. With an early flight, a final night in Arusha is more relaxed.
