The village sits on the south-eastern side of the mountain, past Moshi, and is the starting point of the Marangu route as well as a base for walks, waterfalls and Chagga village visits.

Route: through Moshi to Himo and uphill

The drive runs east along the main highway to Moshi, continues to the junction town of Himo, and then turns north up the mountain road to Marangu. It is paved all the way to the village centre.

The last part climbs steadily through banana and coffee gardens and gets cooler as you gain height. With Moshi's town traffic in the middle, the ride is closer to two hours than one.

What to know about Marangu

Trek base
Several hotels here host climbers the night before and after the Marangu route. The gate is above the village; climb-day transport is arranged by your trekking operator.
Not only for climbers
Day walks to waterfalls and through Chagga farmland make Marangu a pleasant stop even if you are not going to the summit.
Spread-out hotels
Accommodation is scattered along the road and side lanes. Give your hotel name so the driver goes straight there.

Luggage and group size

Climbing kit takes space. A car fits two climbers with duffels; a minivan suits three to seven people with full gear. If your operator stores spare luggage during the trek, ask whether it stays in Marangu or Moshi so you know which drop-off to book.

In the long rains, around March to May, side lanes off the main road can be muddy. The main road itself is paved.
