The village spreads across the green south-western slopes of Kilimanjaro and gives its name to one of the mountain's most popular climbing routes.

From the plain up to the slopes

The first part follows the main highway east from the airport. The driver then turns north onto a road that climbs gently through banana groves, coffee plots and Chagga farmsteads, with the air getting noticeably cooler.

After rain the higher lanes can be slippery, so the drive may take longer in the wet seasons, roughly March to May and November to December.

Village, hotel and gate are not the same place

This transfer goes to your guesthouse or lodge in the Machame area. The climb starts at the national park gate above the village, and the trip there on climb day, along with permits, registration and porters, is arranged by your trekking operator.

If your operator has asked you to meet at a hotel in Moshi instead, book that transfer rather than this one. Check your trek documents before choosing, and share your operator's name so the driver can coordinate if plans change at short notice.

Packing for the ride

Duffels and daypacks
Climbing groups carry bulky bags. For three or more people with full gear, a minivan avoids a tight squeeze.
Rental gear
If you will collect rental equipment locally, ask your operator where; it is often in Moshi, not in Machame.
Warm layer
Evenings on the slopes are cooler than at the airport. Keep a fleece in your hand luggage, since nights at this height can feel chilly after a warm flight.
