This is the town most Kilimanjaro climbers sleep in before and after the mountain. On clear mornings the snow-capped summit of Kibo stands right above the rooftops.
How long is the drive from JRO to Moshi?
Around an hour. The driver follows the main highway east across flat farmland towards the mountain. Traffic is lighter than on the Arusha side, and the road enters Moshi through its outer neighbourhoods before reaching the compact centre.
Moshi is a calm, walkable town by Tanzanian standards, with markets, cafés and climbing outfitters. Hotels range from simple guesthouses in the centre to garden lodges on the northern edge, where the land starts to rise towards the slopes.
Arriving for a Kilimanjaro climb
Most operators hold their gear check and briefing at a Moshi hotel the evening before the trek. The transfer brings you to that hotel; the drive to the park gate on climb day is organised by your trekking company.
Climbers travel heavy: a large duffel, a daypack, sleeping bag and boots that often hang off the outside. Two climbers with full kit fit in a car, but groups of four or more are more comfortable in a minivan.
Timing tips for Moshi
- Rest before you climb
- Many people add a spare day in Moshi after a long-haul flight. It also gives a buffer if a bag arrives on a later flight.
- Rainy months
- The long rains (about March to May) and short rains (around November and December) mostly affect the mountain and side lanes, not the paved highway.
- After the climb
- If you fly home the day you come off the mountain, allow time to shower, repack and eat before the airport run.
