Arusha is the working capital of Tanzania's safari business: operators brief their guests here, stock up, and send convoys west towards the parks each morning.

The road from JRO into Arusha

From the airport the driver joins the main highway between Moshi and Arusha and heads west. It is a paved two-lane road through maize fields, small trading centres and roadside markets, with Mount Meru growing larger ahead on a clear day.

The slow part is usually the final stretch. Arusha's approach roads fill up in the morning and late-afternoon rush, and lorries, buses and motorbikes share every lane. The upper end of the time range is typical when you land at those hours.

Where people stay in Arusha

Town centre
Business hotels and mid-range options near the clock tower area, practical for meetings, banks and shops.
Leafy suburbs and the Meru slopes
Guesthouses and boutique lodges in garden settings north of the centre, often reached by short unpaved lanes.
Coffee estates on the outskirts
Lodges on working or former plantations, quieter and set among trees, popular as a first and last night of a safari.

First night before a safari

Most northern circuit itineraries start in Arusha, so this is the transfer many safari guests take on arrival day. If your operator collects you from the hotel the next morning, give us the hotel name exactly as it appears on your itinerary, as several lodges carry similar names.

Soft duffel bags are preferred on light aircraft and in safari vehicles. If you are carrying a hard suitcase you plan to store in Arusha, mention it when booking so the right car size is sent.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the drive from Kilimanjaro Airport to Arusha take?

Usually 72–90 minutes for the 53 km. Traffic on the edge of Arusha decides if the ride ends up nearer the shorter or the longer figure.

What does a private transfer to Arusha cost?

Typically around €45–60 for a car with up to three passengers and €60–75 for a minivan. The exact price for your date and vehicle appears before you confirm.

My flight lands after dark. Is that a problem?

No. Many flights reach JRO in the evening or at night. Share your flight number and the driver follows the arrival time; the agreed price stays the same if the flight is late.

Can the driver take me to a lodge outside the city?

Yes. Give the lodge name and address when booking. Some lodges on the outskirts are reached by gravel lanes, which can add a few minutes.

Is Arusha a good base for Arusha National Park?

Yes, the park is close to town. Game drives there are arranged with a safari operator or your lodge, not as part of this transfer.
