This farming town in the highlands between Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a popular lodge base for crater visits.

What the journey looks like

You cross the plain to Arusha, head south-west across Maasai country to Makuyuni and then west to Mto wa Mbu. Right after the village the road climbs the Rift Valley escarpment in a series of bends, with views back over Lake Manyara.

At the top the landscape changes to red soil, wheat and coffee farms and patches of forest. Karatu's lodges are spread out around the town, many on farms reached by unpaved lanes. Plan a break about halfway.

Why stay in Karatu

Close to the crater
The Ngorongoro gate is a short drive away, and staying outside the conservation area means you do not pay conservation fees for the nights you sleep here.
Cool highland climate
Nights are fresh at this altitude. Pack a jumper, even in the dry season.
Farm lodges
Many properties sit on coffee estates or in large gardens, suiting families and travellers who want space between game drives.

Transfers, safaris and fees

This transfer brings you and your luggage to your Karatu lodge. Visits to the Ngorongoro Crater or Lake Manyara are separate game drives with a licensed safari operator or your lodge, and entry and conservation fees are paid under the current regulations.

In the long rains (about March to May) and the short rains (around November and December), lodge lanes can be slippery red mud. Allow extra time in those months, and keep valuables and a light jacket in your hand luggage rather than in a bag packed deep in the boot.
