Where JRO sits and why it matters for your transfer

Kilimanjaro International Airport lies roughly halfway between Arusha and Moshi, a short access road away from the main highway that links the two towns. That position makes it the natural arrival point for both of the region's big reasons to travel: climbing Kilimanjaro and the safari parks of the northern circuit.

Evening and night landings are common, so many travellers spend the first night close by in Arusha, Usa River or Moshi and continue into the parks the next morning.

Destinations from Kilimanjaro Airport at a glance

Usa River and Arusha (40–90 minutes)
Usa River, about 30 km away, is a string of garden lodges and coffee estates along the highway east of Arusha. Arusha itself is 53 km away and is the usual base for safari briefings, shopping and a first night under Mount Meru.
Moshi, Machame and Marangu (about 1–2 hours)
Moshi is the climbers' town at the foot of Kilimanjaro. Machame and Marangu are villages on the mountain's southern slopes where many treks begin. The transfer takes you to your hotel in the village; the climb itself and the gate formalities are handled by your trekking operator.
Mto wa Mbu and Karatu (about 3–4.5 hours)
Mto wa Mbu sits at the foot of the Rift Valley escarpment next to Lake Manyara. Karatu, higher up among farms and coffee estates, is the last town before the Ngorongoro gate and has many highland lodges.
Tarangire and the Ngorongoro rim (about 5–6.5 hours)
Tarangire National Park, known for elephants and baobabs, and the lodges on the Ngorongoro Crater rim are the longest rides. Park and conservation fees are separate from the transfer and are paid under the current regulations.

Choosing the vehicle

A standard car suits one to three travellers with normal suitcases. Climbers and safari guests often travel with more: duffel bags, sleeping bags, camera gear and spare boots. A minivan for up to about seven people is the safer choice for families and groups, and larger vehicles can be requested.

Tell us your luggage when booking, especially trekking duffels or long camera lenses in cases. Child seats can be requested in advance.

Seasons and road conditions in northern Tanzania

The main travel months are roughly June to October, when it is dry and wildlife gathers near water, and January to March. The long rains usually fall from about March to May and the short rains around November and December.

The main highways from the airport towards Arusha, Moshi, Mto wa Mbu and Karatu are paved. Side roads to lodges, trek villages and park gates can be rough or muddy in the wet months, which adds time. On the long rides west, a short break for food and stretching your legs is normal and worth planning in.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Kilimanjaro Airport from Arusha and Moshi?

Arusha is about 53 km away, usually 72–90 minutes by private car. Moshi is about 41 km away, usually 51–64 minutes.

What if my flight lands late at night?

Share your flight number when booking; the agreed price does not change if the flight is delayed. For late landings, a first night in Usa River, Arusha or Moshi keeps the drive short.

Is a transfer to Ngorongoro or Tarangire a safari?

No. The transfer brings you to your lodge or town. Game drives, crater descents and park entry are organised separately with a licensed safari operator or your lodge, and the related fees are paid under the current regulations.

Can I get a transfer to the start of my Kilimanjaro climb?

Yes, to your hotel in Moshi, Machame or Marangu. Transport from the hotel to the park gate on climb day is normally part of your trekking package.

Are the roads paved?

The main highways towards Arusha, Moshi, Mto wa Mbu and Karatu are paved. The final stretch to some lodges and villages is gravel or dirt and can be slow in the rainy seasons.
