Two Alpine Advent destinations, one winter trip

Salzburg feels grand and musical, with baroque squares, church concerts and the fortress above the old town. Bled is smaller and quieter: a lake, an island church, a castle on the cliff and festive lights along the water.
Salzburg Christkindlmarkt 2026: dates and practical tips
According to the organisers, the Christkindlmarkt on Domplatz and Residenzplatz, with parts of Kapitelplatz, opens on Thursday 19 November 2026 and closes on 1 January 2027. Entry is free. On 24 December the market closes in the afternoon, and on 31 December the stalls stay open until early evening, with selected food stands running past midnight.
Salzburg also has several smaller Advent markets, for example at Mirabell Square, at Hellbrunn Palace and up at the fortress, each with its own dates and opening hours. Weekends in late November and December are the busiest times; weekday mornings are calmer.
Bled Winter Fairy Tale 2026/27
The official Bled tourism programme lists the Winter Fairy Tale from 27 November 2026 to 10 January 2027, stretching from the Spa Park past the lakeside promenade towards Hotel Park. Expect a chain of lights along the shore, wooden huts with food, mulled wine and local crafts, concerts and children’s activities.
Highlights in the 2026/27 programme include a performance of the Legend of the Sunken Bell on 25 and 26 December and a drone light show over the lake at midnight on New Year’s Eve. Many visitors combine Bled with a day in Ljubljana, which has its own festive December programme in the old town.

- Slovenia’s best-known ski resort, with family-friendly slopes close to the village. The season usually starts in December, depending on snow and snowmaking. About 50 minutes from Ljubljana Airport.
- Vogel above Bohinj
- Skiing with views over Lake Bohinj, reached by cable car. Bohinj is about 50 minutes from Ljubljana Airport, and quieter than Bled.
- Salzburg ski areas
- Resorts in the Salzburger Land, such as those around Zell am See–Kaprun, Saalbach and the Gastein valley, usually start their main season in early December; glacier skiing at Kitzsteinhorn often opens earlier. Check each resort’s opening dates.
Airports and transfers
For Bled, fly into Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU). Bled is about 30 minutes away, and Kranjska Gora and Bohinj are each about 50 minutes. For Salzburg, Salzburg Airport W. A. Mozart (SZG) is close to the city, and the main ski resorts of the Salzburger Land are reached by road from there. The two regions are a few hours apart by car.
In winter, both Austria and Slovenia require winter equipment on vehicles in snowy conditions, and mountain roads can be slow after fresh snowfall. If you travel with skis or snowboards, declare them when you book a private transfer, for example through HotelTaxi, so a vehicle with enough room is sent. The driver meets you in arrivals with a name sign.
