Kaprun sits at the foot of the Kitzsteinhorn, a glacier ski area that opens long before most Alpine resorts and stays open well into spring. That makes it a destination for early-season ski weeks, race training and late-season trips as well as classic winter holidays.

Why skiers come to Kaprun early and late in the season

The Kitzsteinhorn reaches just over 3,000 m, and its glacier slopes usually open in autumn, when lower resorts are still green. Ski clubs, national teams and racers train there in October and November, and in spring the glacier often has good snow when the valleys are already thawing.

In mid-winter, Kaprun is part of a ski region with the Schmittenhöhe in nearby Zell am See. The village also has its own small family mountain, the Maiskogel, close to the centre.

Salzburg Airport to Kaprun: the route

The first part is the same as for Zell am See: either via Lofer and Saalfelden or via the Tauern motorway and the Salzach valley, depending on traffic. Near Zell am See and Bruck the road turns south into the Kaprun valley.

The village is spread along the valley floor, and a road continues several kilometres up to the glacier lift station. Some hotels and apartments lie along this road rather than in the centre, so give your exact address. Snow is common on the final section, and the vehicle runs on winter tyres, with chains used when needed.

Kaprun for different kinds of trips

Race and club training
Teams travel with several pairs of skis each and often with tools and waxing kit. Declare all equipment so a large enough vehicle is sent.
Families
The Maiskogel and the ski schools suit beginners. A minivan with child seats keeps everyone and the luggage together.
Spring skiing
From March, mornings on the glacier and afternoons in the valley are a popular combination. Roads are usually clear by then, but snow can still fall.

Frequently asked questions

Can I travel to Kaprun in October or November?

Yes. Transfers run whenever there are flights, and the glacier is usually open in autumn. The drive time is the same as in mid-winter, although early snowfall is possible.

Is Kaprun far from Zell am See?

No, the two are only a few kilometres apart. Zell am See is 77 km from the airport and Kaprun 100 km, so the transfer to Kaprun takes a little longer.

Can the driver take us to the glacier lift station?

Yes, if your accommodation is there or you want to go straight to the slopes, enter that as the destination when booking.

We are a ski club with lots of equipment. What should we book?

Give the number of people and the number of ski bags. For larger teams, a larger vehicle can be requested so that everything travels together.
