Schladming lies just across the provincial border in Styria, below the Planai. Although it belongs to another region, Salzburg is its nearest international airport and the usual gateway for ski weeks there.

Crossing into Styria: the drive to Schladming

From the airport, the driver joins the Tauern motorway south. After the tunnels, the transfer leaves the motorway in the Altenmarkt and Radstadt area and follows the Enns valley road east. Shortly after Radstadt you cross from the province of Salzburg into Styria, and Schladming appears after a few more villages.

There is no mountain pass on this route, which helps in heavy snow. The busiest points on Saturdays are the motorway near Salzburg and the junctions in the Enns valley.

Planai, Hochwurzen and the town itself

Schladming is a real market town rather than a purpose-built resort, with a lively main square. The Planai rises directly behind it and is linked with the Hochwurzen, the Hauser Kaibling and the Reiteralm, all within the Ski amadé area. The town hosted the 2013 Alpine World Ski Championships.

Accommodation is spread out: in town near the Planai lifts, on the Rohrmoos plateau above, and in villages such as Pichl, Haus im Ennstal or Ramsau am Dachstein. Roads up to Rohrmoos and Ramsau are steeper and narrower, so give your exact address.

Getting back to Salzburg Airport

  1. Work out the pickup time

Take the 84-minute upper drive time, add about two hours for check-in and security, and leave about 3.5 hours before departure.

  2. Adjust for Saturday

On changeover Saturdays, add another 30 minutes and leave about 4 hours before your flight.

  3. Adjust for your location

From Rohrmoos, Ramsau am Dachstein or Haus im Ennstal, add a little extra time for the local roads.

Frequently asked questions

Is Salzburg or Graz the better airport for Schladming?

Salzburg is usually the shorter option: 91 km against 180 km from Graz. Graz can make sense if your flight connections or schedule work better there.

Is the road to Schladming difficult in winter?

No mountain pass is involved; it is motorway and valley road. The vehicle runs on winter tyres, and chains are fitted only if conditions require them.

Can you drop us in Ramsau am Dachstein or on the Rohrmoos?

Yes. Enter the exact address when booking. The price is shown before you confirm and may differ slightly from the Schladming town price.

How busy is it during the Nightrace?

Very busy around the race evening, usually in late January. Transfers still run, but allow extra time and book early if your dates are close to it.

Do you take snowboards and boot bags?

Yes. Declare all equipment when booking so the provider can send a vehicle with enough space.
