Salzburg Airport W. A. Mozart transfer

This page explains how a private ski transfer from Salzburg Airport (SZG) works and what to expect on the way to Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Zell am See, Kaprun, Schladming, Flachau, Obertauern and Bad Gastein. HotelTaxi books your ride with a local, professional transfer company that knows the airport, and the total price is shown and agreed before you book.

The airport lies on the western edge of Salzburg, right by the motorway network. The seven resorts are roughly one to one and three-quarter hours away by road, depending on the valley, the weather and the day of the week.

Transfers from this airport

Arriving at Salzburg Airport in the ski season

Salzburg is a compact airport, but between December and April it handles a large number of ski charter and holiday flights from the UK, Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland and Israel. Many of them land on Saturdays and Sundays, so passport control and the baggage hall can be busy at those times.

Your driver waits in the arrivals area with a name sign. Share your flight number when you book: the local provider follows the actual landing time, and the agreed price stays the same if your flight is late. Exact meeting details are arranged directly between the provider and you by phone or WhatsApp. The ride is private, with no shared shuttle and no stops at other hotels.

Ski resorts served from SZG

Flachau
72 km, usually 54–68 minutes. The quickest of the seven, almost all motorway. A family favourite in the Ski amadé area.
Schladming
91 km, usually 67–84 minutes. Just over the border in Styria, below the Planai, with a lively town centre.
Obertauern
92 km, usually 70–88 minutes. A high resort on a mountain pass, built around the Tauernrunde ski circuit and known for reliable snow.
Zell am See
77 km, usually 72–90 minutes. A lake town with the Schmittenhöhe directly above it, popular with mixed groups of skiers and non-skiers.
Kaprun and Saalbach-Hinterglemm
Kaprun: 100 km, usually 80–100 minutes, with the Kitzsteinhorn glacier for early and late-season skiing. Saalbach-Hinterglemm: 87 km, usually 82–103 minutes, in the Glemm valley at the heart of the Skicircus.
Bad Gastein
97 km, usually 77–97 minutes. A belle-époque spa town at the head of the Gastein valley, with thermal baths alongside the ski areas.

Which roads the transfers use

Flachau, Obertauern, Schladming and Bad Gastein are reached via the Tauern motorway (A10), which runs south from Salzburg through a series of tunnels. Zell am See, Kaprun and Saalbach-Hinterglemm can be reached either through the Saalach valley via Lofer and Saalfelden, or via the A10 and the Salzach valley. The driver chooses on the day according to traffic and road conditions.

Saturday is changeover day in most Austrian ski resorts. Departing and arriving guests share the same roads, and queues on the A10 and around Salzburg are common in the late morning and afternoon, especially during school holidays. In winter, vehicles run on winter tyres and carry snow chains when conditions require them, and the last stretch to a resort can be snow-covered after a fresh fall.

Choosing the right vehicle

Private car
Suits 1–3 passengers with suitcases and a ski bag each.
Minivan
For families and groups of up to about 7. Ski bags, boot bags and child seats fit more easily, and everyone arrives together.
Larger groups
Ski clubs and company trips can request larger vehicles. Give the passenger number and the amount of equipment when booking.
Skis and child seats
Declare skis, snowboards and boot bags when booking so the right vehicle is sent. Child seats can be requested at the same time.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Salzburg Airport from the ski resorts?

Flachau is closest at 72 km, about an hour. Zell am See, Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Schladming, Obertauern, Bad Gastein and Kaprun are between 77 and 100 km away, usually 70 minutes to one and three-quarter hours in normal winter conditions.

Does HotelTaxi also drive into Salzburg city?

From this airport HotelTaxi offers transfers to the ski resorts listed on this page. Rides within Salzburg city are not part of this offer.

Is Saturday a bad day to travel?

Saturday is the busiest day because most resorts change over then. The drive itself is the same, but allow extra time for queues on the motorway, especially on the way back to the airport.

Can we bring several pairs of skis or a snowboard bag?

Yes, as long as you declare the equipment when booking. The provider then sends a vehicle with enough room, which may be a minivan even for a small group.
