The town grew up around thermal springs and still has the grand belle-époque hotels of its spa years. Today it combines skiing in the Gastein valley with thermal baths, which appeals to couples and to groups where not everyone wants to ski every day.
Bad Gastein: a spa town with ski lifts
Bad Gastein is built on a steep slope at the head of the Gastein valley, with a waterfall running through the middle of town. Historic hotels stand on terraces around it, and thermal water is still used in hotels and in public baths, both here and in nearby Bad Hofgastein.
The valley's ski areas include the Stubnerkogel and Schlossalm, the Graukogel, Sportgastein higher up, and Dorfgastein near the valley entrance, all part of Ski amadé. Many guests mix skiing days with spa afternoons.
How the drive to the Gastein valley works
Tauern motorway
The transfer heads south on the A10, through the tunnels towards Bischofshofen.
Salzach valley
The road follows the Salzach valley west for a short stretch before turning south into the Gastein valley.
Valley entrance
The valley begins with a narrow gorge section, after which it opens out at Dorfgastein.
Bad Hofgastein and Bad Gastein
You pass the spa town of Bad Hofgastein before the road climbs to Bad Gastein at the head of the valley.
Steep streets and hotel drop-offs
Because the town is built on a hillside, some streets are steep and narrow, and a few hotels have their entrances on different levels. The driver stops as close to your entrance as the street allows; hotel staff can often help with luggage.
If you are staying in Bad Hofgastein, Böckstein or near Sportgastein, enter that address instead. The drive time changes slightly, and you see the price before you book.
Frequently asked questions
Is Bad Gastein the same as Bad Hofgastein?
No. They are separate towns in the same valley. Bad Hofgastein is a few kilometres before Bad Gastein, so its transfer is slightly shorter.
Can we still enjoy Bad Gastein if some of us do not ski?
Yes. The thermal baths, walks and historic town centre make it one of the better choices for mixed groups.
Is the road into the Gastein valley open all winter?
Yes, it is the main valley road and is cleared regularly. After heavy snow it can be slower, and the driver uses chains if required.
Can the car reach hotels on the steep streets?
Most hotels can be reached by car. Where a street is too narrow or steep, the driver stops at the nearest accessible point.
How long before my flight should I be picked up?
About 4 hours before departure, and around 4.5 hours on Saturdays when changeover traffic is heavier.
