Obertauern sits on top of the Radstädter Tauern pass at around 1,700 m. Its height gives it a reputation for reliable snow and a long season, and most hotels are close to the slopes.

From the airport to the top of the pass

  1. Tauern motorway south

The first and longest part is the A10 from Salzburg, through the tunnels towards the Enns valley.

  2. Leaving the motorway

The transfer leaves the motorway in the Radstadt area and heads south towards Untertauern.

  3. The pass road

The road climbs through a narrow valley with hairpins in its upper section. This is the slowest part of the drive.

  4. Arrival in Obertauern

The village lies right on the pass, with hotels on both sides of the road and lifts starting between them.

A high, compact and snow-sure resort

Because Obertauern is so high, the season usually starts in late November and often lasts into spring, when lower resorts are closing. The village is small and built for skiing: many hotels are ski-in, ski-out, and there are few long walks with equipment.

The Tauernrunde, a circuit of lifts and slopes around the village, can be skied in both directions in a day. Groups of friends and ski clubs like the resort for that reason, and the après-ski is lively in high season.

Leaving Obertauern for your flight

The drive back takes up to 88 minutes in normal conditions. Add about two hours at the airport and leave Obertauern about 3.5–4 hours before departure. On a Saturday, or when snow is forecast for the pass, plan 4–4.5 hours.

If heavy snow is forecast for your departure day, contact your provider by phone or WhatsApp to agree an earlier pickup.

Frequently asked questions

Is the road to Obertauern dangerous in winter?

It is a well-maintained pass road that is cleared regularly. It can be snow-covered after heavy falls, so drivers use winter tyres and chains when needed and may drive more slowly.

Can the pass road be closed?

Short closures for clearing or avalanche safety can happen after heavy snowfall. In that case, the provider waits until the road reopens and keeps you informed.

How much luggage space do we need for ski week in Obertauern?

Count suitcases, ski bags and boot bags for each person and declare them when booking. For more than three skiers, a minivan is usually the right choice.

What is the Tauernrunde?

It is a ski circuit around the village that can be done clockwise or anticlockwise. Many hotels are next to one of its lifts.

How early should we leave for a Saturday flight?

Allow 4–4.5 hours before departure on Saturdays. Changeover traffic on the A10 and possible snow on the pass both add time.
