The town lies on the shore of Lake Zell, with the Schmittenhöhe ski mountain rising straight behind it. That mix of lake, old town and ski slopes makes it a common choice for groups where not everyone skis.
Zell am See in winter: lake, old town and the Schmitten
Unlike many ski villages, Zell am See is a proper small town, with shops, cafés and a pedestrianised old centre close to the lake. Lifts up the Schmittenhöhe start close to town, and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier above Kaprun is only a short drive away. Both mountains are usually sold together as one ski region.
Non-skiers can walk along the lake, take a cable car up for the view or spend a day in Salzburg by train. This is why the town attracts couples, families and mixed groups as much as dedicated skiers.
The drive from SZG to Zell am See, step by step
Leaving the airport
After meeting you in arrivals, the driver loads your luggage and skis and joins the road network right next to the airport.
Choosing the valley
The driver either goes west via Lofer and Saalfelden through the Saalach valley, or south on the Tauern motorway and west along the Salzach valley. The first option crosses a short stretch of Bavaria, so keep your passport or ID card at hand.
Approaching the lake
Both routes end at the flat basin around the lake, with the mountains on both sides. Traffic slows near the town on Saturdays and in the late afternoon.
Arrival at your accommodation
The driver stops at your hotel or apartment, or at the nearest accessible point if it is inside the pedestrian zone.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take from Salzburg Airport to Zell am See?
Usually 72–90 minutes for the 77 km. Saturday traffic or snowfall can add time, but the agreed price does not change.
Does the route go through Germany?
One of the two usual routes crosses a short section of Bavaria between Salzburg and Lofer. Carry your passport or ID card, as checks are possible.
Can we be dropped in Kaprun or Schüttdorf instead?
Yes. Enter the exact address when booking; Kaprun has its own transfer page, as the drive is slightly longer.
Is Zell am See a good base if some of us do not ski?
Yes. The town has a lake promenade, shops, restaurants and good rail links, so non-skiers have plenty to do while others are on the slopes.
Can we book a ski bag and a pushchair?
Yes. Declare both when booking, together with any child seats, and the provider sends a vehicle with enough room.
