The road south along the coast

From the airport the car crosses the Han River and turns south along the long beach road that runs from Da Nang towards Hoi An. On one side are resort hotels and the sea, on the other the five limestone peaks of the Marble Mountains.

The road is flat and mostly straight. Expect busier traffic in central Da Nang during the evening rush and lighter flow once you are past the Marble Mountains. Near Hoi An the route turns inland past rice fields and vegetable gardens before reaching town.

Getting close to the Ancient Town

Hoi An's Ancient Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of merchant houses, assembly halls and the Japanese Covered Bridge, is a walking area. Cars are not allowed into the core lanes, and motorbikes are barred at set times of day.

If you have booked a homestay or small hotel inside the old quarter, the driver stops at the nearest accessible street and you walk the last stretch. Many hotels will send someone to help with bags if you let them know your arrival time. Hotels outside the core, along the river or in the rice-field areas around town, are reached directly.

Where you might be staying

Old quarter and riverside
Atmospheric, close to the lantern streets and night market, but with the last few metres on foot.
Cam Thanh and the rice fields
Quiet villas and homestays among paddies and coconut palms, reached on narrow but drivable lanes.
An Bang and the beach side
Relaxed beach cafés and guesthouses a short ride from town. Give the exact address, as lanes look alike.

Heading back to DAD

Hotels in Hoi An usually arrange a pickup at the main entrance or a nearby street. For an international flight, leave about four hours before departure: roughly an hour for the drive, plus three hours at the airport. In the rainy months from September to December, when parts of town can flood, add extra time.
