The hill town is the home of Brunello di Montalcino, and its slopes are covered with wine estates. Many travellers are heading not to the town itself but to a winery or country hotel somewhere on the hill.

From the airport to Brunello country

The driver crosses the north of Rome and drives up the A1 into Tuscany, usually leaving at the Chiusi-Chianciano Terme exit. From there the route runs west across the Val d'Orcia, past San Quirico d'Orcia, before the final climb up to Montalcino.

The last part winds through vineyards and oak woods, and the town's fortress comes into view near the top. Expect bends and slower speeds for the final twenty minutes or so.

Estates, the town and the abbey

The walled town is small, with steep lanes and restricted traffic in the centre; the driver stops at the nearest permitted point. Wine estates are spread across every side of the hill and some are reached by long gravel drives.

South of the town, the Romanesque abbey of Sant'Antimo stands alone in the valley near Castelnuovo dell'Abate. Bagno Vignoni, with its thermal pool in the village square, is also a short drive away.

Tips for wine travellers

Give the estate name
Several estates share similar addresses. The name and a map pin avoid confusion on the last kilometres.
Harvest season
September and October are the busiest months at the wineries. Book accommodation and the transfer early.
Bottles in the luggage
If you are flying home with wine boxes, say so when booking the return trip so enough space is planned.
Villages and day trips
Buonconvento in the Arbia valley and Castelnuovo dell'Abate below the town can also be booked as the destination. Pienza and Montepulciano are both within easy reach for a day out among the vineyards.
