The town sits on a flat-topped cliff of volcanic tuff on the border of Umbria and Lazio, so the last part of the trip is a climb from the valley floor to the old streets on top.

From the coast to the Umbrian border

The car leaves Fiumicino on the motorway towards Rome, follows the ring road around the north of the city and then joins the A1, the Autostrada del Sole, heading towards Florence. This is a toll motorway, and the tolls are part of the transfer price.

North of Rome the landscape opens into the Tiber valley, with farmland and small hill towns on both sides. After leaving the A1 at the Orvieto exit, you see the rock and the cathedral facade rising above the plain before the road starts its steep ascent.

Getting into the old town on the rock

Orvieto has two parts: Orvieto Scalo in the valley, around the railway station, and the historic centre on the cliff. A funicular links the station with Piazza Cahen at the edge of the upper town.

In the old town, parking is scarce and many streets are pedestrian or closed to general traffic. Where your hotel or apartment is on a lane a car cannot use, the driver stops at the closest permitted point. Ask your host in advance where vehicles normally drop guests, and add that note to the booking.

Who travels from FCO to Orvieto

Couples on a slow Italy trip
Many stay two or three nights for the Duomo, with Luca Signorelli's Last Judgement frescoes in the Cappella di San Brizio, and the cellars of Orvieto Classico wine.
Country house guests
Agriturismi and villas in the hills around the town are often down unpaved tracks. Give the exact address or GPS point so the driver can plan the final stretch.
Families with luggage
A minivan leaves room for suitcases and a pushchair. Child seats can be requested when booking.

Frequently asked questions

Can the car drive up to my hotel in Orvieto's historic centre?

It depends on the street. Some hotels on the rock can be reached by car, but many lanes are pedestrian or restricted. Where access stops, you are dropped at the nearest permitted point and finish on foot.

Is a transfer better than taking the train to Orvieto?

Trains to Orvieto leave from Roma Termini, so from the airport you would first need to get into the city and change. A private transfer goes directly from arrivals to your accommodation with your luggage in the car.

Can we stop on the way, for example in a hill town?

Stops that are not part of the booked route need to be arranged when booking, because they lengthen the trip. Mention your plan and the price shown will reflect the actual journey.

Is it worth staying overnight rather than visiting on a day trip?

Orvieto is quiet in the evening once day visitors leave, and the underground tours of tunnels and caves beneath the town plus St Patrick's Well fill a full day. An overnight stay suits travellers arriving on a late flight.

What does the price include?

The total covers the private vehicle, the driver and motorway tolls for the route. It is agreed before booking and does not change if your flight lands late.
