The capital of Umbria is a university city on a hilltop, with its old centre high above the modern districts and the railway station. Where you are dropped depends a lot on which of those levels you are staying on.

The drive up the Tiber valley

  1. Fiumicino to Orte

The car crosses the north of Rome on the ring road and follows the A1 toll motorway to the Orte junction.

  2. Onto the E45

At Orte the route leaves the A1 for the toll-free E45 dual carriageway, which follows the Tiber valley north towards Umbria.

  3. Past Todi and Deruta

You pass below the hill town of Todi and later Deruta, known for its painted ceramics, with green hills on both sides.

  4. Up to the city

The last kilometres climb from the valley ring roads towards your hotel, the station area or the edge of the historic centre.

Hotels on the hill and in the lower town

The historic centre around Corso Vannucci and Piazza IV Novembre is a limited traffic zone. Some hotels inside it can register an arriving car, but many guests are dropped at the edge and walk the last stretch.

Perugia solved its hill long ago: escalators run up through the Rocca Paolina fortress from Piazza Partigiani, and the small Minimetrò line climbs from the Pian di Massiano area to the edge of the centre. Hotels near the Fontivegge station and agriturismi outside the city are straightforward to reach by car.

When Perugia gets busy

Umbria Jazz
The festival takes over the centre in July with concerts in the squares. Rooms book out, so reserve the transfer and the hotel early.
Eurochocolate
The chocolate fair in autumn fills the old town with stalls and visitors. Expect slower access to the centre on those days.
Students and academic dates
Perugia's universities, including the University for Foreigners, bring students and parents at the start of term. A minivan handles a year's worth of luggage better than a car.

Frequently asked questions

Why not fly to Perugia airport instead?

Perugia's own airport is much closer but has a limited schedule. If your international flight arrives in Rome, the private transfer brings you to Perugia directly without a train change at Roma Termini or Terontola.

Can I be dropped at my apartment on Corso Vannucci?

Often only at the edge of the restricted zone, depending on the street and whether your host can register the car. Ask your landlord where guests are normally dropped and add it to the booking.

Is the price the same at night?

The price you see before booking is the total for your date and time. It does not change later because of traffic or a delayed flight.

Can we travel on to Assisi or Gubbio the same day?

Yes, you can book another Umbrian town as the destination, or a second transfer from Perugia. The price shown reflects the actual address.
