Spoleto is a compact Umbrian town of Roman ruins, Romanesque churches and a papal fortress, best known for its summer arts festival. It is one of the closer Umbrian towns to Rome, which makes it a calm first night after a long flight.
Through Terni and over the hills
After the Rome ring road the car takes the A1 north as far as Orte, then a fast dual carriageway east to Terni. From there the old Via Flaminia, the Roman consular road, carries on north through wooded hills and tunnels before dropping into the Spoleto valley.
It is a varied drive: motorway first, then a river valley with industry around Terni, then quiet green countryside. The final approach shows the fortress of the Rocca Albornoziana on its hill above the town.
Reaching the upper town
The old centre climbs a steep hill, and its streets are largely restricted to residents. Spoleto has made this easy for visitors with free escalators and moving walkways that lead from car parks at the foot of the town up to the cathedral area and the fortress.
If your hotel is in the upper town, the driver can drop you at the nearest permitted point or at one of these car parks, depending on what your host advises. Hotels in the lower town and country houses in the valley are easy to reach by car.
Reasons people stay in Spoleto
- Festival dei Due Mondi
- Opera, theatre and dance from late June into July. It is the busiest time of the year for hotels, so book early.
- The Ponte delle Torri
- The tall medieval aqueduct bridge below the fortress is a short walk from the centre and the start of easy woodland paths.
- Cycling and walking
- The former Spoleto–Norcia railway line is now a route for walkers and cyclists. Declare bicycles when booking so a suitable vehicle is sent.
- Base for the Valnerina
- The valley of the Nera river and the Marmore waterfalls near Terni are within reach for day trips.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Spoleto from Rome Fiumicino?
167 km by road. The transfer usually takes 127 to 159 minutes, mostly on motorway and dual carriageway.
Is the drive easier than the train?
The train involves getting from the airport to Roma Termini or Tiburtina first and then a regional train. With luggage or after a night flight, a direct car is simpler.
Will the car take us into the historic centre?
Only if your street is accessible and your host has arranged it. Otherwise you are dropped close by, often near one of the escalator entrances.
Can we book a transfer during the festival?
Yes. Because traffic and parking around the centre are busier in late June and July, share your hotel's drop-off advice when booking.
