The village in the Tuscan Maremma is known for its warm sulphur springs. Most travellers are heading to the spa resort or to hotels and farm stays near the free cascades of the Cascate del Mulino.
Up the coast, then inland
This route does not cross Rome. From Fiumicino the car heads north on the coastal A12 motorway towards Civitavecchia and continues on the Via Aurelia past Tarquinia to Montalto di Castro, with the sea on the left for much of the way.
After Montalto the road turns inland through the quiet Etruscan countryside around Vulci and climbs to Manciano, a hill town with views over the Maremma. Saturnia is a short drive further on. The inland section is a two-lane country road, so the pace slows.
Spa resort or the free cascades
- The spa resort
- The Terme di Saturnia resort, with its thermal pool, spa and golf course, lies below the village. Declare golf bags when booking so the vehicle has room.
- Cascate del Mulino
- The warm water runs over limestone terraces by an old mill. Entry is free, and it is busy on summer weekends.
- The village
- Saturnia itself is small, on a hill with a few hotels and restaurants around the main square.
- Farm stays
- Agriturismi in the surrounding hills are reached by country lanes; give the property name and location.
Packing for the springs
The water is warm all year, so a winter visit works well. Pack swimwear in your hand luggage if you want to bathe on the day you arrive, and old swimwear is a good idea because the sulphur smell lingers. A small bag for wet things on the return trip is useful.
Pitigliano and Sorano, towns built of volcanic tuff, are within easy reach for an afternoon out.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the transfer from Fiumicino to Saturnia?
Usually 119 to 149 minutes for 142 km. The coastal motorway is quick, while the inland roads after Montalto di Castro are slower.
Does the car go through Rome?
No. Fiumicino is on the coast west of Rome, and the route follows the coast north, which keeps city traffic out of the journey.
Can you drop us at the Cascate del Mulino?
Yes, the cascades can be booked as the destination. Search for the cascades by name when booking, as the spa resort is a separate place a few kilometres away.
Can we travel with golf clubs?
Yes. Declare each golf bag when booking so the right vehicle is sent; a group of golfers usually needs a minivan.
