It is one of the faster rides of its length in Umbria, because most of it runs on dual carriageway along the flat Valle Umbra.

Down the Valle Umbra from Perugia's side

The driver takes the SS75 south-east past Assisi and Spello to Foligno, then joins the Via Flaminia towards Spoleto. Trevi stands on its hillside to the left, olive groves line the slopes, and the valley stays wide and level almost to Spoleto's gates.

The town itself spreads up a hill crowned by the Rocca Albornoziana fortress, with the Ponte delle Torri aqueduct bridging the gorge behind it.

Getting into the upper town

Spoleto's centre is a limited-traffic zone with steep lanes. To help visitors, the town has a system of escalators and moving walkways that climb from car parks at the foot of the hill towards the Duomo and the Rocca.

If your hotel is within the ZTL, ask whether it can register the transfer car. If not, the driver drops you at the nearest permitted point, often close to one of these lifts or escalators. Hotels in the lower town near the station have easy door-to-door access.

Reasons people come to Spoleto

Festival dei Due Mondi
The summer festival of music, theatre and dance runs for a few weeks around late June and July. Rooms go quickly, so book both hotel and transfer early.
Valnerina and Norcia
Spoleto is a natural base for the Nera valley, the Marmore waterfalls and the Monti Sibillini, all within a short drive.
Cycling and walking
The former Spoleto–Norcia railway is a popular bike route. Declare bicycles when booking so a suitable vehicle is sent.

Frequently asked questions

Which road does the transfer to Spoleto use?

Usually the SS75 to Foligno and then the Flaminia south. The whole 55 km route avoids motorways and tolls.

Can we be dropped at Piazza del Duomo?

Generally not, because the upper town is restricted. The driver stops at your hotel if access is permitted, otherwise at the nearest allowed point.

Is a minivan worth it for four people?

With four large suitcases, yes. A minivan here typically costs around €125–160, compared with €100–130 for a standard car.

Can we stop in Spello or Trevi on the way?

Both lie close to the route. Mention it when booking; the provider confirms whether a short stop is possible and any price difference.

Is it busy during the festival?

Yes, the town is lively in late June and July and traffic near the centre is slower. Allow a few extra minutes on the return.
