The city is the capital of Umbria and sits on a high ridge above the Tiber valley. Getting up there is the easy part; the old town's traffic rules decide where exactly the car stops.
From Sant'Egidio up the hill
The airport is east of the city, so the drive runs west along the valley and then winds up to the ridge. Depending on where you are staying, the driver approaches from Ponte San Giovanni or via the ring roads around the hill.
Weekday rush hours and term time at the universities can slow the climb a little; at other times the ride is quick and simple.
Escalators, the Minimetrò and the ZTL
Perugia handles its hilltop centre in an unusual way. The acropolis around Corso Vannucci and Piazza IV Novembre is a ZTL, and visitors are encouraged to park below and ride up. Escalators run from car parks such as the one at Piazza Partigiani through the vaults of the Rocca Paolina, and the Minimetrò, a small cable-hauled people mover, climbs from Pian di Massiano to the centre.
For a transfer this means: if your hotel is inside the ZTL and can register the vehicle, the driver may be able to reach the door; otherwise the drop-off is at a permitted point at the edge of the centre, often next to an escalator or lift.
Typical places travellers stay
- Historic centre hotels
- Small hotels and apartments along Corso Vannucci and the old lanes. Ask your host whether they register guest cars before you arrive.
- Near Fontivegge and the station
- Business hotels in the lower city, outside the ZTL, with straightforward kerbside drop-off.
- Villas on the surrounding hills
- Country houses towards Lake Trasimeno or the Tiber valley. Send the full address; some are reached by narrow white roads.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Perugia old town from the airport?
15 km, which the transfer covers in about 21–27 minutes. It is one of the shortest rides from PEG.
Can the driver go into the ZTL on Corso Vannucci?
Only where local rules allow it, usually when your hotel registers the car's plate in advance. Otherwise the driver stops at the nearest permitted point.
What is the Minimetrò?
A small automatic people mover that runs from the Pian di Massiano area up to the historic centre. It is useful for day trips but not needed if your transfer drops you near your hotel.
We are visiting for Umbria Jazz in July. Anything to know?
The festival fills the centre and hotels early, and some streets are busier than usual. Book the transfer ahead and share your hotel's access instructions.
Is the price the same at night?
The price you see when booking is the price you pay for that time. It does not change if the flight lands late.
