The town occupies a short promontory on the western shore of the lake, the largest in peninsular Italy.
Along the lake on the Perugia–Bettolle road
From the airport, the driver skirts Perugia on its southern side and joins the RA6, the dual carriageway that runs from Perugia to the A1 at Bettolle. It soon reaches Lake Trasimeno and follows its northern shore, passing the exits for Magione, Passignano and Tuoro, before you leave at the Castiglione del Lago exit and drive south to the town.
The road is toll-free. Between Passignano and Tuoro the views of the water and the islands open up on the left.
The town, the lake and where people stay
Castiglione del Lago's walled old town sits on the promontory, with the Rocca del Leone fortress and the Palazzo della Corgna at its tip. The centre is small, with traffic restrictions; drop-off is at your hotel where access is permitted or just outside the walls.
Most holiday accommodation is spread around the lakeshore and the hills inland: campsites, holiday parks, agriturismi and villas with pools. Families and groups of friends often take a property for a week, which is where a minivan makes sense.
Ideas for a stay by the lake
- Boats to the islands
- Ferries run to the lake islands, including Isola Maggiore, from several shore towns, with a reduced timetable outside summer.
- Beaches and swimming
- The lake is shallow and warms quickly in summer, with small beaches and lidos around the shore.
- Day trips
- Cortona, Montepulciano and Perugia are each within about an hour, making the lake a practical base between Umbria and Tuscany.
