Along the Interbalnearia

From the airport the car joins the Interbalnearia almost immediately and heads east. The road passes the Costa de Oro, a chain of small beach towns, and then crosses rolling farmland with views of the Sierra de las Ánimas hills.

Near Punta Ballena, home of the white Casapueblo building on the headland, the road meets the coast again before running into Punta del Este. On a summer Friday afternoon or on New Year's Eve the traffic towards Punta can slow considerably.

Mansa, Brava and the peninsula

Punta del Este stands on a peninsula with two different beaches. Playa Mansa, on the bay side, has calm water suited to families. Playa Brava, facing the Atlantic, has bigger waves and the well-known hand sculpture rising from the sand.

The tip of the peninsula holds the port, Gorlero avenue and older apartment blocks. Many visitors stay in high-rise apartments along the two ramblas or in houses in leafier neighbourhoods inland, and some streets around the port become crowded in the evening.

Tips for this route

Apartment rentals
Give the building name and exact address. Many towers along the rambla look similar.
Families
A minivan gives room for beach equipment and pushchairs. Child seats should be requested at booking.
Late arrivals
Building concierges often work set hours. If you land at night, confirm key collection before you set off.

Returning to Carrasco

For an international flight, leave Punta del Este about five and a half hours before departure in high summer: up to two and a quarter hours on the road, three hours at the airport and a buffer for traffic on the Interbalnearia. Outside the peak season, five hours is usually enough.
