La Barra is the lively beach village just east of Punta del Este, and the driver takes you to your hotel or rental.

Through Punta and over the wavy bridge

After about two hours on the Interbalnearia and the coast road, the car skirts Punta del Este and follows the Rambla Brava east. The last landmark is the Leonel Viera bridge over the Arroyo Maldonado, famous for its undulating deck that makes cars rise and dip as they cross.

On the far side of the bridge is La Barra. In January evenings traffic around the bridge and the main road through the village can be very slow, so the final kilometres sometimes take longer than the rest of the drive suggests.

Life in La Barra

La Barra mixes beaches, boutiques, galleries, restaurants and nightlife. Montoya beach is popular with surfers and younger visitors, while houses and hotels stretch inland into wooded streets and east towards Manantiales.

Many guests rent houses rather than staying in hotels. Some side streets are narrow or sandy, but drivers can normally reach the door.

Useful details

Exact address
Several streets in La Barra have similar names or no visible signs. A map pin helps.
Boards and bikes
Surfboards and bicycles must be declared at booking so they fit safely.
Night arrivals
If you land late in January, the village is often busy until the early hours. Allow for slow traffic near the bridge.

Return pickup times

For an international flight, leave La Barra about five and three quarter hours before departure in summer. That covers up to two and a half hours on the road, three hours at the airport and extra time for the bridge and Punta traffic. In quieter months, five and a quarter hours is usually enough.
