From the airport to the lighthouse

The first part follows the Interbalnearia east towards Punta del Este. Past Punta the route continues along the coast through La Barra and Manantiales, with dunes, pine woods and open fields becoming more common.

The final kilometres are calm and rural. José Ignacio itself occupies a small rocky point topped by its lighthouse, with beaches on either side.

A small village with a big summer

José Ignacio is a low-rise village of houses, a handful of restaurants and boutique hotels, popular with visitors who want a quieter alternative to Punta del Este. It has stayed small, low and green.

Many guests stay outside the village, in chacras and houses along country roads, by the lagoons or among the dunes. These lanes can be unpaved and poorly signed. Share a precise map pin and the gate details with your booking.

Before you travel

Luggage for a long stay
Visitors often stay for weeks. If you bring several large cases, a minivan avoids a tight fit.
Key handover
Rental houses often have a caretaker. Arrange the handover time with them, allowing for the full drive time.
Groceries
The village has few shops. Plan your first supplies with your host before arriving late.

Going back to MVD

For an international departure, set the pickup about six hours before take-off in summer: around two and three quarter hours on the road, three hours at the airport and a short buffer. If you are staying on a remote estate, tell the driver in advance so they can plan the unpaved section.
