Across the city to the old port
From the airport the car crosses the eastern districts of Montevideo. Depending on traffic, drivers either follow the Rambla, the long seafront avenue along the River Plate, or take the inland avenues towards the centre.
The Rambla is slower but pleasant, passing Carrasco, Pocitos and Punta Carretas. Weekday rush hours are the busiest times. Ciudad Vieja sits at the western tip of the centre, on a small peninsula beside the port.
Old Town streets and how close cars get
The Old Town's grid of 19th-century buildings starts at Plaza Independencia, with the Palacio Salvo and the Puerta de la Ciudadela gateway, and runs to the Mercado del Puerto and the docks. Several streets, including the Sarandí pedestrian street, are closed to cars.
Most hotels can be reached by car. If yours is on a pedestrian section, the driver stops on the nearest open street. Teatro Solís and the main museums are within walking distance.
