Pokhara is Nepal's lake town and the starting point for treks in the Annapurna region, with the Machhapuchhre peak rising above Phewa Lake.
What the Prithvi Highway is like
The road leaves the valley over the Nagdhunga pass, drops in hairpins to the Trishuli River and follows it west to Mugling, where the rivers meet. From there it climbs gradually past Dumre and Damauli through the Marsyangdi and Seti valleys to Pokhara.
It is the country's main east-west corridor for this part of Nepal, busy with trucks and tourist buses, and roadworks are frequent. Expect a stop for dal bhat or tea at a roadside restaurant.
Monsoon and travel times
From June to September, landslides can close sections of the highway for hours, and the drive can take much longer than the typical range. In October, November and spring the road is usually more predictable, though roadworks still cause waits.
Domestic flights between Kathmandu and Pokhara take well under an hour in the air. Some travellers fly one way and drive the other, or drive to carry more luggage.
Arriving in Pokhara
- Lakeside
- Most hotels sit in Lakeside along Phewa Lake, with cafes, trekking shops and boat hire. Some lanes are narrow, but cars reach most hotels.
- Sarangkot and hill hotels
- Lodges on the hills above the lake have views but steep access roads. Tell the provider in advance.
- Trekking starts
- Many treks begin from trailheads beyond Pokhara. This transfer ends in Pokhara; arrange the trailhead ride separately.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the drive from Kathmandu airport to Pokhara?
Typically about 5 hours 25 minutes to almost 7 hours for the 206 km. Landslides, roadworks and festival traffic can add much more.
Is it safe to travel the Prithvi Highway?
It is the main route used daily by buses and private vehicles. Local drivers know the bends and conditions; in heavy monsoon rain they may wait for a road to reopen.
Can I stop at Bandipur or Manakamana on the way?
Bandipur is a short detour from Dumre and can be added as a stop when booking. A longer visit is better planned as a separate overnight.
Should I start right after landing?
If you land in the morning, you can reach Pokhara by evening. After an afternoon arrival, a night in Kathmandu and an early start is easier and avoids driving mountain roads in the dark.
Is there room for paragliding gear or bikes?
Yes, if declared when booking. A minivan is the better choice for bicycles, large trekking bags or paragliding equipment.
