Lumbini, in the southern plains near the Indian border, is the birthplace of the Buddha and a UNESCO World Heritage Site visited by pilgrims from across Asia.
A full day across Nepal
The route follows the Prithvi Highway out of the Kathmandu Valley and along the Trishuli River to Mugling, then turns south to Narayanghat in the plains. From there it heads west on the East-West Highway to Butwal at the foot of the hills, and finally south-west via Bhairahawa (Siddharthanagar) to Lumbini.
The hill section is winding and slow; the Terai stretch is flatter but busy with trucks, buses and village traffic.
Flying versus driving
Domestic flights connect Kathmandu with Bhairahawa, about half an hour's drive from Lumbini, and Gautam Buddha International Airport there also handles some international services. Flying saves most of a day; driving suits groups with luggage, pilgrims who want to stop at temples on the way, or anyone avoiding a connection.
In the monsoon from June to September, both landslides on the hill road and weather delays to flights are possible.
