Tribhuvan International Airport transfer
This page is about private transfers from Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu, Nepal's only international gateway for most visitors. You can book a short ride to your hotel in Thamel or a long overland journey to Pokhara, Chitwan or Lumbini, with a car or minivan from a local transfer company and the total price confirmed before you travel.

Landing in Kathmandu
Tribhuvan sits on the eastern side of the Kathmandu Valley, close to Pashupatinath and only a short distance from the old city. The international and domestic terminals are separate buildings, so if you connect to a domestic flight, allow time to move between them.
Arrival formalities, including visa on arrival for many nationalities, can take a while when several flights land together. Share your flight number when booking so the provider can follow delays rather than you watching the clock.
Destinations from KTM and typical drive times
- Thamel (10 km)
- Kathmandu's traveller district of guesthouses, trekking shops and cafes. Around 19–24 minutes, more in rush hour.
- Nagarkot (19 km)
- Ridge-top village on the valley rim known for Himalayan sunrise views. About 41–52 minutes via Bhaktapur.
- Dhulikhel (25 km)
- Hill town east of the valley on the Araniko Highway, with mountain panoramas and quiet resorts. Roughly 49–62 minutes.
- Pokhara (206 km)
- Lakeside base for the Annapurna region, reached on the Prithvi Highway in about five and a half to almost seven hours.
- Chitwan, Sauraha (154 km) and Bandipur (150 km)
- Jungle lodges by Chitwan National Park take around 269–337 minutes; the hilltop Newar town of Bandipur about 260–325 minutes.
- Lumbini (294 km)
- Birthplace of the Buddha near the Indian border. The longest route, typically about 431–539 minutes.
Long drives on mountain highways
Every route west and south leaves the valley over the rim at Nagdhunga and drops to the Trishuli River on the Prithvi Highway. It is a two-lane road with heavy truck and bus traffic, many bends and sections under construction, so the times above are realistic averages rather than promises.
During the monsoon, roughly June to September, landslides can block parts of the highway for hours. Domestic flights also link Kathmandu with Pokhara and with Bhairahawa near Lumbini, and some travellers combine a flight one way with a road transfer the other.
Picking a vehicle
- Car
- Fine for one to three people within the valley and for long trips with modest luggage.
- Minivan or larger vehicle
- Better for families, trekking groups with duffel bags and anyone carrying mountain bikes or climbing gear. Declare equipment when booking.
- Child seats
- Request them at booking, especially for the winding drives to Pokhara, Bandipur and Chitwan.
Seasons that shape your trip
October and November bring clear mountain views and the main trekking season, and March to May is the second peak, with rhododendrons in bloom and warmer days in the lowlands. Winter mornings in the valley can be foggy, which sometimes delays flights.
Nepal's large autumn festivals, Dashain and Tihar, fill roads and buses as people travel home. Book transfers early if your dates fall in that period.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take from Kathmandu airport to Thamel?
About 19–24 minutes for the 10 km in normal traffic. Evening rush hour and festival days can double that.
Is it better to drive or fly from Kathmandu to Pokhara?
Flying is quicker in the air, while driving lets you travel on your own schedule with all your luggage and see the river valleys. Weather affects both: fog and cloud can delay flights, and monsoon landslides can slow the road.
Can the driver meet me if my flight is delayed?
Yes. Share the flight number when booking; the provider follows the arrival time, and the agreed price stays the same.
Do I need to change money before the transfer?
No, the transfer is paid through HotelTaxi when you book. Having some Nepali rupees for tea stops on long drives is still useful.
Can a transfer start at the domestic terminal?
Yes, mention it when booking so the driver goes to the right building. This is useful if you fly back from Lukla or Pokhara and continue by road.
