Bandipur is a preserved Newar hill town on a saddle above the Marsyangdi valley, once a trading post on the route between India and Tibet, and now a peaceful stop with traditional brick houses and wide mountain views.
How the journey unfolds
Most of the trip is on the Prithvi Highway: over the valley rim at Nagdhunga, down to the Trishuli River, then past Mugling into the Marsyangdi valley. At the roadside town of Dumre, the driver turns off and climbs a winding side road up the ridge to Bandipur.
That last climb is short but steep, and the views open up as you rise above the valley floor.
The car-free bazaar
The heart of Bandipur is its main bazaar, a stone-paved street lined with carved wooden windows, guesthouses and cafes. Vehicles stop at the edge of the old town, and you walk the last part with your luggage.
Travel light if you can, or ask your guesthouse whether staff can help carry bags. Wheeled suitcases are awkward on the stone paving and steps. Evenings in the bazaar are quiet once day visitors leave.

- Many travellers spend a night or two here on the way to Pokhara or Chitwan to split a long road day.
