The village sits on a ridge at about 2,000 metres on the eastern rim of the Kathmandu Valley and is known for Himalayan sunrise views on clear mornings.

From the valley floor to the ridge

The first part follows the busy road east towards Bhaktapur, the old Newar royal city. Beyond it the road starts to climb in tight bends through terraced fields and pine forest, and the temperature drops noticeably as you gain height.

The last stretch is steep and narrow in places, and drivers take it slowly, especially after rain or in fog.

Why people stay in Nagarkot

Most visitors come for one or two nights to watch the sun rise over the Himalayan range, which on a clear day stretches from the Langtang area towards the Everest region. Hotels are spread along the ridge, many with terraces facing north, and there are easy day hikes down to villages and towards Changu Narayan temple.

It also works as a quiet first night after a long flight, away from Kathmandu's traffic.

Practical notes

Warm layers
Evenings and early mornings are cold for much of the year, more so in December and January. Keep a jacket in your hand luggage.
Views and season
October and November usually give the clearest views. In the monsoon the peaks are often hidden by cloud.
Stop in Bhaktapur
Bhaktapur lies on the way. A visit to its squares can be arranged with the provider when booking.

Frequently asked questions

Can I go to Nagarkot straight from my flight?

Yes. Many travellers do so to wake up to the mountain views the next morning. Afternoon arrivals usually reach the ridge before dark.

Is the road to Nagarkot paved?

Yes, the main road is paved, but it is narrow and winding near the top. Rain and fog can slow the final section.

Will I see Everest from Nagarkot?

On very clear days the Everest region is visible far to the east, but it is small on the horizon. The closer Langtang and Ganesh Himal ranges are more prominent.

Should I choose Nagarkot or Dhulikhel?

Nagarkot is higher and more focused on sunrise views. Dhulikhel is a real town with more everyday life and sits on the main road east.
