The road east to Malia

From the airport the driver follows the north coast highway past Gouves and Hersonissos. Shortly afterwards the road passes above Stalis, a smaller beach resort, before the exits for Malia.

Malia sits on a flat coastal plain with a long sandy beach, so once off the highway the last part of the trip is on local roads between hotels and fields. In high season, the main streets of the resort can be slow in the evening.

The busy strip towards the sea is known for bars and clubs and attracts many younger travellers in summer. Hotels here are close together, and access can be slow at night.
Old village and east coast hotels
The old village near the main road has narrow lanes and tavernas. Larger family resorts lie along the coast to the east, towards the Minoan palace site.
Stalis
Between Hersonissos and Malia, with a sandy beach and a calmer feel. It is a little closer to HER than Malia centre.

Many groups of friends fly to Malia together. For four to seven people, one minivan is usually simpler than splitting into two cars, and everyone arrives at the same time. For larger groups, several vehicles or a bigger vehicle can be requested.
