Transfers from this airport

Where is Heraklion Airport and how do you leave it?

HER lies right on the sea at the eastern edge of Heraklion, the largest city on Crete. The runway runs parallel to the shore, so planes approach low over the water and the terminal is only a few minutes from the main island road.

That road is the north coast highway, known locally as VOAK and signed as the E75. Almost every transfer from HER uses it: eastbound towards Hersonissos, Malia and Agios Nikolaos, or westbound past the city towards Rethymno and Chania. Long stretches are being upgraded, so expect occasional roadworks and lane changes, especially around the larger towns.

Which resorts can you reach from HER?

East: Hersonissos and Malia
The busiest beach resorts of Crete are 22 to 32 km away, roughly half an hour by car. Hotels line the coast between Anissaras, Hersonissos, Stalis and Malia.
Far east: Elounda
About 68 km and 69–87 minutes away, beyond Agios Nikolaos on the Mirabello Gulf. Many upmarket resorts and villas sit here, facing the island of Spinalonga.
West: Agia Pelagia and Bali
Two smaller bay resorts. Agia Pelagia is 29 km from HER at the foot of a winding side road; Bali, 53 km away, spreads over several coves with hotels on the slopes.
Far west: Rethymno and Chania
Rethymno is 85 km away and Chania 140 km, both with Venetian harbours and old towns where cars stop at the edge of pedestrian lanes.

Choosing the right vehicle

A standard private car suits one to three travellers with normal suitcases. Families with pushchairs, groups of friends and anyone travelling with golf bags or diving gear usually need a minivan, which takes up to about seven people with luggage. Larger vehicles can be requested for bigger groups.

Child seats can be added when you book; just give the age of each child. Please declare bicycles, diving equipment or other bulky items in advance so the provider sends a vehicle with enough space.

Season and arrival patterns

Crete's main holiday season runs from about April to October, with the heaviest arrivals in July and August, when many charter flights from the UK, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Scandinavia and Poland land on the same afternoons and evenings. The arrivals hall and passport control can be crowded at those times.

Your driver follows your flight number, so a delay does not change the agreed price. Share the number when booking and keep your phone switched on after landing so the provider can reach you by call or WhatsApp.

The car takes you straight to your accommodation with no shared stops at other hotels.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Heraklion Airport from Hersonissos and Malia?

Hersonissos is about 22 km from HER, a drive of roughly 22–28 minutes. Malia is about 32 km away, usually 32–40 minutes along the north coast highway.

Is HER the right airport for Chania?

Chania has its own airport on the Akrotiri peninsula, which is much closer to the town. HER makes sense when your flight lands in Heraklion anyway; the drive to Chania then takes around two and a half to three hours.

What happens if my flight to Heraklion is delayed?

The local provider tracks your flight number and adjusts the pickup to your actual landing time. The price you agreed when booking stays the same.

Can I book a minivan for a family with luggage?

Yes. Choose a minivan when booking for up to about seven passengers with suitcases, and add child seats if needed. Larger vehicles are available on request.

Is there a new airport replacing Heraklion?

A new airport is under construction at Kastelli, south-east of Heraklion, but it is not open yet. Until it opens, international flights to central Crete continue to use HER.
