The village sits around a cluster of coves just off the highway, roughly halfway between Heraklion and Rethymno. Your driver meets you in arrivals and takes you to your hotel on the hillside or by the beach.

From HER to the coves of Bali

The car passes Heraklion on the bypass and then follows the north coast highway west through the hills. After the Agia Pelagia area the road drops closer to the sea, with long views along the coast towards Rethymno.

Bali has its own exit from the highway. From there a short local road leads into the village, with side streets branching off to the individual bays.

In July and August the village roads around Livadi and the harbour get busy with parked cars and delivery vans, so the last kilometre can take longer than the highway section. Several small hotels share the same access streets, so give the exact property name when booking.

Bali's four bays

Livadi
The longest beach, nearest to the main road, with a flat stretch of cafés and loungers behind it.
Varkotopos
A sheltered cove enclosed by hills, with hotels on the slopes above.
Limani
The old harbour with tavernas and small boats, at the heart of the village.
Karavostasi
The quieter northern bay, less built up and reached by a steep path down to the sand.

Who Bali suits

Bali is compact and mostly small hotels and studios, which appeals to couples and families who like snorkelling in calm coves. The terrain between the bays is hilly, so a hotel that seems close on the map can be a steep walk.

The village is officially part of the Rethymno region, even though it is reached from Heraklion in about an hour.
