This is the longest of the main transfers along the Riviera Maya. A private car lets you travel straight to your hotel without changing buses or waiting for other passengers.

How long is the drive from Cancún Airport to Tulum?

Count on roughly one and a half to almost two hours. The driver follows Federal Highway 307 south for the whole way, past Puerto Morelos, through Playa del Carmen and on past Puerto Aventuras and Akumal.

South of Akumal the road runs through dense forest with many signposted cenotes. Traffic is usually lighter on this section, but the passage through Playa del Carmen can add time at busy hours. Bottled water and a toilet stop before leaving the airport are worth thinking about, especially with children.

Where are you staying in Tulum?

Beach road hotels
Boutique and eco hotels line the narrow coast road south of the ruins. Traffic here is slow, parking is limited and some places sit back from the road, so give the exact hotel name.
Tulum town
The town on the highway has restaurants, shops and many smaller hotels and apartments. Drop-off is usually straightforward on its streets.
Residential areas
Between town and the beach are newer condo and villa developments. Share a map pin and your host's number, because building names are not always signposted.

Ruins, cenotes and the beach

Tulum is known for its Maya site on a cliff above the sea, for the beaches south of it and for the freshwater cenotes in the forest around the town. Many visitors are couples, wellness travellers and divers interested in cave and cenote diving.

Divers travelling with gear bags, or anyone with a lot of luggage, should mention it when booking so the right vehicle is sent.

For many travellers, yes, because of the distance. The driver takes you directly to your accommodation, including the beach road, without changes or extra stops.

Can the driver reach hotels on the Tulum beach road?

Can we visit a cenote or the ruins on the way?
