Both places suit travellers who want calm water, snorkelling and a quieter base than Playa del Carmen, with a private driver taking you to the door.

Two different places on one route

Puerto Aventuras
A planned community built around a marina, with condos, villas, a few hotels, restaurants along the waterfront and a golf course. It is reached through a main gate from the highway and is popular with families and fishing or sailing enthusiasts.
Akumal
A small bay community known for snorkelling with sea turtles that feed on the seagrass. Accommodation is mainly villas, condos and smaller hotels spread along several bays, plus a few resorts nearby.

How the drive goes

The whole route follows Federal Highway 307. After Puerto Morelos you continue past Playa del Carmen, which is the busiest part of the drive, and then the road becomes quieter as it runs through forest with turn-offs to beach resorts and cenote parks.

Puerto Aventuras comes first. Akumal is a short way further south, so if you stay there, plan for the upper end of the drive-time range. The final metres to Akumal's beachfront villas are on small local roads.

Snorkelling, diving and luggage

Many visitors come here with their own snorkelling or diving equipment. Declare dive bags or underwater camera cases when you book so a vehicle with enough room is sent.

In Akumal Bay, rules apply to protect the turtles and seagrass, and access to some snorkelling areas is controlled or guided. Check the current local regulations with your accommodation after you arrive.

Frequently asked questions

How early should I leave Puerto Aventuras or Akumal for my flight?

Plan a pickup about 4¼ hours before an international departure, or about 3¼ hours before a domestic flight. The drive alone is 57–72 minutes, and traffic through Playa del Carmen varies.

Is Akumal more expensive than Puerto Aventuras?

The two are close together, so prices are similar. Akumal is slightly further, which can make a small difference. The exact price for your address is shown before booking.

Can we stop at a cenote on the way from the airport?

A stop is not part of the standard transfer. If you want one, ask before booking; it may be possible as a separate arrangement at an additional cost.

What vehicle do we need for a family of five?

A minivan, which takes up to about seven passengers with luggage. Indicative prices are usually around €85–120. Child seats can be requested when booking.
