What is the Cancún Hotel Zone?
The Hotel Zone is a long, narrow strip of land shaped roughly like the number seven, with the Nichupté Lagoon on one side and the Caribbean Sea on the other. Almost everything along it is reached from one road, Boulevard Kukulcán.
Instead of street numbers, addresses here use kilometre markers along the boulevard. A hotel at km 9 is in a very different place from one at km 20, so the marker is the most useful detail to give when you book.
Which part of the strip are you staying in?
- Northern section
- The part nearest downtown Cancún, with calmer water facing Isla Mujeres. It is popular with families, and the hotels are generally close to each other.
- Around Punta Cancún
- The bend of the seven is the busiest area, with nightclubs, restaurants, shopping centres and the convention centre. Expect more traffic and pedestrians here in the evening.
- Southern section
- The long stretch facing the open sea is lined with large resorts, many of them all-inclusive. Coming from the airport, this part of the strip is usually reached first.
How long is the drive from Cancún Airport to the Hotel Zone?
The drive takes about 30–38 minutes. From the airport the road heads north towards the city and then joins Boulevard Kukulcán near the southern end of the strip, so travel time depends a lot on how far along the boulevard your hotel is.
The boulevard has traffic lights, bus stops and pedestrian crossings, and around Punta Cancún it can be slow in the evening. Resorts usually have a guarded entrance where the driver stops briefly before going on to the lobby.
Frequently asked questions
Does the driver need my kilometre marker?
It helps a lot. Give the full hotel name and, if you know it, the km marker on Boulevard Kukulcán. Several hotels have similar names, and the marker removes any doubt.
Does the Hotel Zone transfer cost less than Playa del Carmen?
Yes, because the distance is much shorter. A car to the Hotel Zone is usually around €40–60, while Playa del Carmen is further south and priced accordingly. The exact price is shown before you book.
Can we stop at a supermarket on the way?
Ask when you book. A short stop may be possible by arrangement with the provider, but it is not included automatically and may affect the price.
We are a group of six with luggage. Which vehicle do we need?
A minivan, which takes up to about seven passengers. Usual indicative prices for this route are €50–75. Mention pushchairs or extra bags so enough space is planned.
Can you take us from the Hotel Zone to downtown Cancún or the ferry later?
This page covers the airport transfer. For other trips during your stay, contact HotelTaxi by WhatsApp with the details and you will receive the price before booking.
