Along Highway 307 to Playa del Carmen
The route follows Federal Highway 307 south for most of the way, passing the turn-offs for Puerto Morelos and several large resort areas. The road is generally wide and in good condition.
Traffic usually builds as you reach Playa del Carmen itself, where the highway passes through the town. The last few minutes, from the highway down to the beach streets, are often the slowest part of the journey, especially in the late afternoon.
Staying near 5th Avenue
Life in Playa del Carmen centres on 5th Avenue, or Quinta Avenida, a long pedestrian street parallel to the beach lined with shops, bars and restaurants. Cars cannot drive along it.
If your hotel or apartment faces 5th Avenue, the driver stops on the nearest cross street and you walk the last short distance. Many small hotels in the centre have no driveway, so travelling with compact luggage makes the final steps easier.
