Cancún International Airport transfer
This page explains how private transfers from Cancún International Airport (CUN) work, which parts of the Mexican Caribbean coast you can reach and how long the drives take. Transfers from this airport
Arriving at Cancún Airport
Cancún is the main gateway to the Riviera Maya and one of the busiest airports in Mexico. It has several terminals, and international and domestic flights do not all use the same one. Your local provider confirms the meeting arrangements for your terminal, so share your flight number when you book.
After immigration and customs you walk through the arrivals hall, which is often crowded with sales desks offering transport, tours and other services. If you already have a transfer booked, you do not need to stop there: go directly to the meeting point agreed with your provider, where the driver waits with a name sign.
Where Cancún Airport transfers go
- Cancún Hotel Zone
- The long strip of resorts between the Nichupté Lagoon and the Caribbean, about 25 km and 30–38 minutes from the airport. Hotels are located by kilometre markers along one main boulevard.
- Puerto Morelos
- A quiet fishing village with a protected reef, between Cancún and Playa del Carmen. At 24 km and 20–25 minutes it is the shortest transfer on this list.
- Playa del Carmen
- A lively town known for the pedestrian 5th Avenue and the ferry to Cozumel. The drive covers 54 km and takes about 46–58 minutes.
- Puerto Aventuras & Akumal
- A marina community and a bay known for snorkelling with sea turtles, 75 km south of the airport, usually 57–72 minutes away.
- Tulum
- Maya ruins above the sea, boutique hotels on the beach road and cenotes inland. At 117 km and 88–110 minutes it is the longest of the main transfers.
How the drives along the coast work
Almost every transfer south of the airport follows Federal Highway 307, which runs parallel to the coast through the Riviera Maya. Resorts and towns are reached by turn-offs from this road, so drive times grow the further south you stay, from around 20 minutes to Puerto Morelos to close to two hours to Tulum.
The Hotel Zone is the exception: the route stays within Cancún and follows the boulevard along the strip. Traffic is often heavier in the afternoon and around Playa del Carmen.
Choosing the right vehicle
- Private car
- For up to three passengers with normal luggage.
- Minivan
- For families and groups of up to about seven, or smaller groups with pushchairs or diving gear.
- Larger vehicles
- On request for bigger groups and weddings. Child seats can be requested when booking; declare golf bags or dive gear so the right vehicle is sent.
Season on the Mexican Caribbean
The main season runs from December to April, when the weather is drier and many visitors arrive from North America, South America and Europe. Christmas, New Year and the spring holiday weeks are especially busy, so booking ahead is sensible.
The rainy season roughly covers summer and autumn, which is also the Atlantic hurricane season. In some warmer months sargassum seaweed can reach parts of the coast; conditions vary by beach and year.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my driver at Cancún Airport?
The airport has several terminals, and the meeting arrangements depend on which one you land at. Your local provider confirms the meeting point for your terminal before or on arrival. Walk past the sales desks in the arrivals hall and go straight to that agreed meeting point, where the driver waits with a name sign.
What happens if my flight to Cancún is delayed?
Share your flight number when you book so the provider can follow your arrival. The agreed price does not change if your flight lands late. If your flight number changes, let the provider know by phone or WhatsApp.
How much does a transfer from Cancún Airport cost?
It depends mainly on distance and vehicle. As an indication, a car to the Hotel Zone is usually around €40–60, to Playa del Carmen around €60–85 and to Tulum around €110–150. The exact price is shown before you book.
Is the transfer shared with other passengers?
No. The vehicle is booked only for you and your group, and the driver goes directly to your hotel without stopping at other resorts on the way.
Can I book a transfer from my hotel back to the airport?
Yes. You can book the return when you book the arrival or later, online or by WhatsApp. Give your flight number and departure time, and the pickup time is planned around the drive from your hotel.
