The car ferries to Koh Chang leave from the mainland coast in Laem Ngop district, Trat province. Your transfer ends at the pier. The ferry crossing to the island is not included and is paid locally at the pier.
Five hours across the eastern provinces
This is the longest route on our Suvarnabhumi pages. The car follows the motorway towards Chonburi and then the main highways east through Rayong and Chanthaburi, a province known for fruit orchards and its gem market, before reaching Trat.
The landscape changes from industrial estates to rubber and durian plantations and hills. Expect one or two short breaks on the way; service stations along the highway have food, coffee and clean toilets.
Which pier, and what then
Two car-ferry companies run crossings from piers a few kilometres apart near Laem Ngop. Both land on the north coast of Koh Chang, and the crossing itself usually takes under an hour. If your island hotel recommends a particular pier, tell us when you book.
From the island ferry landing, songthaew pick-up trucks and hotel transfers continue to the beaches on the west coast, such as White Sand Beach, Klong Prao or Kai Bae. That last leg is arranged on the island, not with this transfer.
Before you set off
- Landing time matters
- With up to 337 minutes on the road, a flight landing in the afternoon may reach the pier after the last ferry. Check ferry times and consider a night in Trat.
- Comfort on a long ride
- For families or more than three adults, a minivan gives space to stretch out over five hours.
- Rainy season
- Trat is one of Thailand's wettest provinces from around May to October. Heavy rain can slow the highway and the sea crossing.
