This beach town in Phetchaburi province sits about 25 km north of Hua Hin and is popular with Thai families at weekends. During the week its long, casuarina-lined beach is quiet, which suits travellers who want sea and calm rather than nightlife.
From the airport to the Phetchaburi coast
The driver first circles south-west around Bangkok and then follows the coastal lowlands, past shrimp ponds and salt fields, to join Phetkasem Road near Samut Songkhram. Phetchaburi town is the last larger place before the coast.
Cha-Am is reached before Hua Hin, so the ride is about half an hour shorter than to its better-known neighbour. On Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons the highway is busy with weekend traffic from Bangkok.
What Cha-Am is like
The town centre faces a straight beach road lined with seafood restaurants, small hotels and deckchair rentals. Thai visitors come for long lunches by the sea, so Saturdays and Sundays are lively and weekdays very relaxed.
North and south of the centre, along the road towards Hua Hin, larger resorts with big gardens and pools stand directly on the beach. Some are several kilometres outside town, so having a private ride to the door makes the arrival easy.
